Terms of use
Version 2026-11-02. By signing up, logging in or uploading, you agree to these terms.
1. What this is
notes.davidxie.dev is a small, private, invite-only site for sharing study materials, run by David Xie as an individual ("I", "me"). It's provided for free, as a personal project, to people I've invited. "You" means anyone with an account.
2. Your account
- Keep your password and API tokens secret. You're responsible for everything done with your account, including through your tokens.
- Tell me straight away if you think someone else has access to your account.
- Don't share your account or give out invite codes to people you don't trust.
3. Your content is your responsibility
You keep ownership of what you upload. You give me permission to store it and show it to everyone with an account, which is needed for the site to work.
Lecture slides, textbooks, past papers and other course materials usually belong to someone else, like your university, a lecturer or a publisher. Only upload things you made yourself or are clearly allowed to share. If you're not sure, don't upload it.
You are solely and fully responsible, and legally liable, for everything you upload, for anything you share from here, and for what happens as a result. I don't check, approve or monitor uploads, and I'm not responsible for them.
By uploading something, you confirm that you own it or have every right and permission needed to upload and share it, and that it doesn't break any law or these terms.
4. What you can't upload or do
- Anything illegal where you are or in the UK, or anything that helps someone break the law.
- Child sexual abuse material of any kind. This is reported to the police and the Internet Watch Foundation immediately, along with everything I know about the account.
- Intimate images of anyone shared without their consent, or content that harasses, threatens, bullies or doxxes anyone.
- Content that promotes terrorism or violence, or incites hatred.
- Malware, viruses, phishing pages, scams, or anything made to deceive people or steal their information.
- Anything that infringes someone else's copyright, trademarks or other rights.
- Spam, or anything that isn't study material. Only PDF and HTML files are accepted.
- Coursework or exam answers you've been told not to share, or anything that would help someone cheat.
- Trying to break, overload, probe or get around the service's security or limits, or access other people's accounts or files.
5. You cover any trouble your uploads cause
You agree to indemnify me and hold me harmless: if anyone makes a claim, complaint, demand or legal action against me because of something you uploaded or shared, or because you broke these terms or the law, you'll cover all of the resulting losses, damages, fines, costs and legal fees. You'll also help me deal with it if I ask.
6. What I can do
- Remove any file, or suspend or delete any account, at any time, for any reason or none, without warning.
- Look at files that are reported to me or that I think break these terms.
- Give information about your account and uploads to the police, courts or other authorities when the law requires it, or when I believe it's needed to deal with illegal content or protect someone.
- Change, pause or shut down the service at any time.
7. What's stored about you
Your username, a scrambled (hashed) copy of your password, your files and their details, and the IP address used when you signed up, accepted these terms, and made each upload. The IP addresses are there so abuse can be traced to whoever did it. They're deleted along with your account. Files are kept until you delete them, I remove them, or your account is deleted.
8. Reporting a file
If something here is illegal, harmful or infringes your rights, including your copyright, email david.xie@student.manchester.ac.uk with the link. I'll review reports and remove anything that breaks these terms as quickly as I reasonably can.
9. No promises
The service is provided free, "as is" and "as available", with no warranty of any kind. It may go down, be slow, or lose files at any time. Notes uploaded by other people may be wrong, out of date or incomplete, so check anything important against your course materials. Always keep your own copy of anything that matters.
10. Limits on my liability
As far as the law allows, I'm not liable for any loss or damage of any kind arising from your use of the service, from other people's uploads, or from the service being unavailable or losing data. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't legally be limited, like for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
11. Changes and ending
I may change these terms. If the change matters, you'll be asked to accept the new version before uploading again. You can stop using the service at any time; ask me and I'll delete your account and files. If your account is deleted, sections 3, 5, 9 and 10 still apply to what you uploaded.
12. Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute goes to the courts of England and Wales.
